I've been practising as a Naturopath for 16 years now. Over this time, I've ordered many functional medicine tests for patients, read through hundreds of blood tests and supported patients according- using powerful foods as medicine, lifestyle hacks and additional nutrients and herbs, where needed.
One of these tests I've dabbled in, was epigenetic testing. It's an insightful test to truely personalise medicine for a patient, particularly for a 'full picture' preventative health test or when they've reached the point of chronic health conditions and feel like they've 'tried all things things'.
This isn't my usual patient demographic and as I see women in the hormone health space, I do more 'what's happening now' testing- including organic acids, DUTCH hormone metabolism, food inflammation and comprehensive stool analysis testing. Initially anyway.
But recently as I'm seeing more cases of histamine intolerance, the research has reminded me of the importance of genetic testing for effective treatment.
Symptoms I've witnessed here are patients struggling to have foods like meats, fish, citrus and the real healing foods of broth and fermented food, as it causes them issues such as sleep disturbance, itchiness of the skin and scalp, headaches or even migraines and a runny nose. Particularly in the lead up to the period.
So I reached out to the expert, Carlolyn Ledowsky.
Carolyn Ledowsky is the founder of MTHFR Support Australia. She is currently undertaking her PhD at the University of Technology Sydney where she is investigating methyl folate vs folic acid in women with recurrent miscarriage.
She is a health scientist, researcher, naturopath, herbalist and nutritionist whose focus is education of practitioners and how genetic susceptibility should be a cornerstone of any practice to improve patient outcomes. Her patient support programme intends to empower people to know what might be contributing to their chronic health issues.
Carolyn has spent 15 years supporting chronically ill patients from all over the world, who have searched, sometimes for decades, to find the reason behind their ill health.
Carolyn believes that practitioners who understand genetic susceptibility will be the ones that thrive in the business as patient health outcomes will be significantly improved and their practice will grow with longer wait lists and people wanting to understand more about how they can regain and maintain health for life.
Her practice specialises in genetic susceptibility and how this contributes to biochemical dysfunction and chronic health conditions.
